Yemeni Foreign Minister Calls from Berlin for Intensifying International Support for the Legitimate Government
Yemen Monitor / Berlin / Newsroom: Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Afrah Abdulaziz Al-Zouba, called on Friday for the international community to intensify its support for the Yemeni government to enhance its capacity to restore state institutions, establish stability, and end the crisis in the country. This came during her participation in a roundtable session organized by the German Körber Foundation in the capital, Berlin, as part of the “Berlin Political Breakfast” event, with the participation of German parliamentarians, officials, experts, and representatives of research centers and media outlets concerned with Yemeni and regional affairs. Al-Zouba reviewed the roots of the Yemeni crisis since the armed Houthi group’s coup against national consensus and the legitimate government in September 2014, and the subsequent subversion of the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference and invasion of the capital, Sana’a, leading up to military escalation and threats to international navigation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. She said that the Houthi escalation represents a direct threat to regional and international peace and security, warning that international silence and complacency regarding the group’s violations encourage it to continue threatening global trade traffic. The Minister touched upon the humanitarian situation in Taiz Governorate, accusing the Houthis of continuing to impose a siege on the city, blocking the entry of food, medicine, and essential supplies, and closing health facilities, considering these practices to amount to a crime of collective punishment against the population. She affirmed the Yemeni government’s continued presence in the temporary capital, Aden, and the liberated governorates, alongside its efforts to normalize conditions, rebuild state institutions, and improve services despite limited capabilities and existing challenges. Al-Zouba urged the international community and friendly countries, foremost among them Germany, to provide comprehensive institutional support to the Yemeni government to enable it to fulfill its duties, promote stability, and restore state institutions, emphasizing that this represents the sustainable path to ending human suffering and protecting waterways and international interests. She also called on German parliamentarians and experts to convey the reality of the situation in Yemen to their institutions and decision-makers, and to work toward exerting international pressure compelling the Houthis to halt their escalation and violations. The event was attended by Yemen’s Ambassador to Germany, Luai Al-Eryani.
