UK Reaffirms Support for Yemen, Explores Enhanced Aid Amid Escalating Houthi Attacks
Yemen Monitor / Riyadh / Exclusive: The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to providing vital humanitarian support to Yemen amid escalating Houthi attacks and a deepening humanitarian crisis—particularly in Taiz Governorate—coinciding with preparations for an international donor conference and UK plans to bolster defensive protections for Saudi Arabia against missile and drone strikes. UK Minister of State for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty, stated Thursday that his country stands with the Yemeni people and will continue to deliver critical humanitarian assistance, following high-level talks with the Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. “Honored to meet President Rashad Al-Alimi of Yemen earlier this week,” Doughty wrote in a post on X. He added that the meeting addressed “the intolerable suffering caused by Houthi escalation in Taiz and across Yemen,” reiterating that “the UK stands with the Yemeni people and continues to deliver vital humanitarian support.” According to Arab News, the British minister and Al-Alimi met in Riyadh last Sunday to discuss the worsening conflict in Yemen and broader threats to regional security. Discussions also centered on preparations for an international conference scheduled for later in November, aimed at mobilizing economic and humanitarian support for Yemen as living conditions deteriorate and humanitarian requirements expand amid ongoing military confrontations. Speaking to Al Arabiya English, he stated that the United Kingdom stands alongside its allies “with actions, not just words.” He highlighted British diplomatic efforts regarding Iran and its regional proxy groups, aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further regional escalation. The UK has stepped up defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia, including plans to deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to safeguard major cities and critical infrastructure from Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks. The UK Ministry of Defense confirmed that the deployed fighters will not conduct offensive strike operations, with their scope strictly limited to defensive missions. Taiz at the Epicenter of the Humanitarian Crisis The British diplomatic moves come as renewed fighting across Yemen severely compounds the humanitarian catastrophe, notably in Taiz Governorate, which faces mounting restrictions on basic supply deliveries due to active combat and the closure of key logistics corridors. The United Nations had warned in October that food aid could be cut off for over 800,000 residents in Taiz as combat operations continue to choke off main supply lines. In September, the UK announced an additional £10 million ($13.4 million) in emergency humanitarian funding to deliver food assistance, healthcare, and nutrition services to civilians displaced by the conflict. London’s reassertion of humanitarian aid for Yemen comes in tandem with its heightened defensive assistance to Saudi Arabia, amid widening fallout from Houthi military operations on humanitarian conditions and regional stability.
