Yemen Monitor / Taiz / Newsroom: A human rights organization has disclosed what it described as new details surrounding the death of a United Nations staff member in a Houthi-run prison in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. The Irada Organization Against Torture and Enforced Disappearance said in a statement on Sunday that Mohammed Ibrahim al-Shami, an employee of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Yemen, died on August 21, 2026, inside a secret Houthi detention facility, citing information it said it had obtained from confidential sources. The organisation said the Houthi group did not announce his death until October 31, 2026. It suggested the delay may have been intended to prevent the case and its human rights implications from drawing attention during the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in September, and to avoid international pressure and scrutiny over the circumstances of his detention and death. Irada said it had precise information about the location and nature of the prison. It called for al-Shami’s body to be examined before burial. The organization urged the UN secretary-general, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN special envoy for Yemen to intervene urgently to establish the circumstances of al-Shami’s death and launch an independent investigation into his arrest, alleged torture and death. It also called for the cases of abductees and forcibly disappeared people to be made a priority in UN efforts.
