Yemen Monitor / Newsroom: The local authority in Taiz Governorate has held the Houthi militia responsible for shelling the Al-Hadhara public market in the Al-Wazi’iyah district, west of the governorate, on Friday, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries. In an official statement, the local authority condemned the attack as a “heinous crime.” Citing reports from the military operations room, the statement confirmed that military aircraft did not execute any airstrikes in the Al-Wazi’iyah district throughout the day. The authority rejected any attempts to exploit the victims’ blood or mislead public opinion regarding the party responsible for targeting the market, pointing out that indiscriminate missile strikes conducted by the Houthi group—including the use of ballistic missiles—endanger civilian lives and deepen their suffering. It emphasized that public markets and population centers enjoy protection under international law and must not be targeted, stressing the imperative of holding those responsible for these violations accountable and ensuring they do not enjoy impunity. The local authority called for documenting the circumstances of the attack, preserving physical evidence, and subjecting it to independent technical examination. It also urged citizens to stay clear of strike sites, refrain from handling or moving unexploded ordnance, and immediately report remnants to the competent authorities. Furthermore, the authority demanded that the United Nations and human rights organizations condemn attacks targeting civilians and support investigation and accountability efforts, expressing solidarity with the people of Al-Wazi’iyah and stressing the need for unified efforts to assist those affected, safeguard residents, and uncover the full details of the attack. The local authority extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
